Sorted

Ever since moving to my new apartment, my makeup storage situation has been a cluttered mess. With a relatively small space, things were being tossed around, misplaced, and piled up so much so that I was really neglecting a large part of my collection and just working with a select few products out of my makeup bag.
I had been dreaming up an ideal makeup storage system for a while, but being that I am extremely picky, all of my ideas were either too expensive, too much work, impractical, or just plain ugly. I finally decided that I needed to put my perfectionist personality aside and get my makeup sorted. Here are some tidbits from my new "vanity".

cutlery tray from Ikea holds daily skincare products and face makeup.

An old box, originally the packaging of a clutch wallet, now houses my lipsticks and glosses.

These simple white mugs from T.J.Maxx are a great way to store brushes and mascara.

This acrylic organizer keeps my palettes within easy reach.

As for the vanity table itself, I reused an old desk that I had used in college. It is a simple, inexpensive desk from Walmart that has a convenient pull out drawer, which was a must have for me because I wanted a system that would keep my makeup nicely concealed if needed. With a fresh coat of paint, the desk worked perfectly for me.

To compartmentalize the drawer, I used a combination of these and the acrylic drawer organizers.

Finally, I propped up a simple mirror and now I have a fully functional vanity that didn't cost me much, and keeps my things nicely organized.

I'm so happy with the way it turned out - it's not perfect, but it really makes getting ready in the morning so much more enjoyable and easy. Nothing brings in the new year like a newly organized space and a thorough clean out of the things I really didn't need =).

What are some of your organizing tips?

  1. Ooooh, nice! I prefer the plain desk with the straight lines so much more than the Ikea vanity- which looks "fake" to me! I currently have no space for a proper vanity, ugh! xx

  3. Love the new storage. I have such limited space in my new apt that my makeup collection is spread out throughout my room, so a majority of it does get neglected. Maybe i'll try the tray idea and rotate out new products.

  6. You are very organized. I like how you used an old box for storage. Might just "borrow" that idea.

  8. I love what you did with your setup! It looks great now! The only thing I would change for myself is having the cutlery tray be plastic instead so that it's easier to clean :) I love the size and range of your makeup collection!

  13. I have a wooden tuck box (kind of like a large lunch box which you take to boarding school with you) with all my most used or best loved make-up. Organised to the point of insanity (my Nars eyeshadows are in alphabetical order)- I was able to apply everything during a power cut.

For my nail vernishs and other less used products I have them in wooden wine presentation boxes- they are pine and easily painted or stained.

Everything is stored in a bookcase so things are easy to get at and do not get lost.

The cutlery tray is a great idea, it can be difficult to find storage which is sufficiently shallow.

  15. Looks great! My organising tip would be to make sure to put everything back where it belongs before leaving, otherwise you'll end up with messiness and clutter all over again! x

  18. I love your make up and all that kind of stuff but I recommend not storing your make up brushes like that because all the dust and dirt falls into your brushes.

  19. omg veeed!! you have seriously inspired me!!
I can't find like half my makeup with my clutter! I have been using old vases to hold my brushes but they are so narrow at the bottom and so large at the top that they don't hold as many brushes as I want... love the cup idea!!
